In 2016, DC Comics started to reboot several of Hanna-Barbera’s cartoon series, supposedly updating and modernizing them.
A few of the series reimagined classics like The Flintstones, and Scooby Doo.
Now they have their eyes on Snagglepuss, who they plan to turn into a “gay, southern gothic playwright.”
Snagglepuss was created in 1959, and was a hit years before the Pink Panther (1963). Snagglepuss was chattier than his pink cousin, using catch phrases like “Heavens to Murgatroyd!” “Exit, stage left,” and “Heavens to Betsy.”
No one thought Snagglepuss was supposed to be a homosexual when he appeared on The Yogi Bear Show and The Quick Draw McGraw Show—but within years, gay activists tried to force the idea of his flamboyancy and theatrically tendencies meaning the character was intended to be homosexual.
He wasn’t. Big surprise.
It’s the later interpretation of the character that DC comics are planning to push for their new reboot of the children’s series.
Snagglepuss’ homosexuality, and its role in the plot was confirmed by the writer in an interview with HiLoBrow.com.
He is also known for inserting homosexual overtones into issue 4 of the Flintstones, which he also writes.
“It’s Snagglepuss sort of reinvented as a gay Southern Gothic playwright,” the writer noted.
Yeah, it was not much of a stretch at all. I envision him like a tragic Tennessee Williams figure; Huckleberry Hound is sort of a William Faulkner guy, they’re in New York in the 1950s, Marlon Brando shows up, Dorothy Parker, these socialites of New York from that era come and go. I’m looking forward to it; that’s what I’ll do after The Flintstones. [Russell’s contract in the gravel pit is for 12 issues.] I’ll go right from that into Snagglepuss.
The interviewer added, , “I’ve long admired the affirmative gayness of Snagglepuss.”
Russel replied, saying.
Yeah, it’s never discussed and it’s obviously ignored in the cartoons ’cuz they were made at a time when you couldn’t even acknowledge the existence of such a thing, but it’s still so obvious; so it’s natural to present it in a context where everybody knows, but it’s still closeted. And dealing with the cultural scene of the 1950s, especially on Broadway, where everybody’s gay, or is working with someone who’s gay, but nobody can talk about it — and what it’s like to have to try to create culture out of silence.
Russel also said that the new series will present the cartoon cat as a victim of evil homophobia how dare people have standards in the current year.
“Yes, in fact, an eight-page sampler … it’s about Snagglepuss being dragged in front of the House Committee on Un-American Activities!” he said.
Russel also pointed out what went through his mind doing these comics series.
“I think it’s always good to criticize the time you’re in by putting it in a different time and place, because people aren’t as likely to take it personally,” he said. “That’s really what all science-fiction is; it’s satire set on a different planet or in the future, so people can read about themselves objectively.”
Of course he didn’t even try to make an argument for how portraying a pink lion as a victim of homophobia is commentary on today, since homosexuals aren’t see as very much out of the ordinary these days—especially in entertainment which has been promoting tolerance of the homosexuals for decades.
It’s getting to the point, in many ways, where being gay is far more often portrayed as better than being straight, by the left—they idolize victim culture.
The reboot of Snagglepuss is set to be on shelves sometime in March of this year.
